Spartan Football Begins in Junior High

November 18, 2009

What comes to your mind when you think of Spartan football? I can guarantee that most people think of Friday nights, tailgating, and pep rallies- High School football. However, our Junior High football is just as important at GACS, if not more so because it represents potential and the future of football as we know it.

Varsity Head Coach Ken Robinson says, “Our junior high teams are extremely talented. Our eighth grade team had thirty-two players this past season. Our seventh grade had thirty-seven players. We expect the majority of these young men to continue on into our high school program next year and beyond.”

Our seventh grade team won three games and lost three games and our eighth grade team won five games, lost two games, and tied in one game. As with all our teams, however, more important than the final score is the spiritual emphasis. Coach Robinson adds, “I felt that our junior high teams were very successful this past season. We were successful on the scoreboard, but more importantly in areas that will matter for eternity.”

Chelsea’s Blog: I Can Tell We’re Gonna Be Friends

October 8, 2009

THIS has probably been the busiest week of my life. Being away from home from seven am through four pm every day really takes its toll on a person physically and mentally. I am exhausted to say the least.

The year has started out nicely. I’ve been cast in a play (the annual One-Act Play, Snoopy!) so the performing continues to be a big part of my life. I’m glad to have the opportunity to return to the stage. Having a class every day (Drama Four) set in an actual theatre is a really glorious thing.

All of my classes, aside from Bible, have around twenty students in them. The energy in the room is always really refreshing. The bonding and relationships are nice.

I’ve already had three tests: an AP government reading quiz, an AP Literature essay test, and an AP calculus concept test. My AP government grade was a pleasant surprise, my AP Literature, unknown, and my AP calculus….disappointing. Looks like I may need someone to help me out with that math stuff…ugh..

Making friends is always happening. The most notable relationships which began this week were with the “girl who said ‘hi’ to me in the hallway between every single period on the first day,” the “my parents are late picking me up too” carpool guy, and the “red head who gave me a chocolate bar.” Yes, I do know their real names, but remembering all the new names isn’t easy especially when the weeks are so hectic. But, the excuse of “I’ve met a thousand people this week, so sorry!” seems to be working nicely.

Tomorrow, the juniors and seniors will travel to a camp site in Georgia for our annual beginning-of-the-year spiritual retreat. Everyone seems really excited about it. I’m gonna go and make some more new friends!

I’ll let you know if I have any success…

Student Council Leads Junior High

October 7, 2009

Do any of these names sound familiar to you? Sam Weyen, Mary Johnson, Jackson O’Brien, Justin Lewis, Robert Dicks, Katie Irwin, Parker Stevens, Reagan Cink, Wade Cox, Jordan Williams, Ford Higgins, and Tori Wisted. These are the students who make up our junior high student council. “This year’s group has three girls and nine boys,” said Mrs. Ruby McLean, junior high student council sponsor.

Mrs. McLean is very excited about the group this year. “They are very lively, very involved, and they all participate. One of the fun things we’ve done already is a book challenge: teachers vs. students, for the summer reading kick-off. We used buzzer boards and had academic questions. It was a lot of fun.”

The group meets every Tuesday during lunch and the first Friday of every month. Their most recent project is Accessory Day. It was a dress-up day where the junior high students had the opportunity to show how they would accessorize their uniforms to make them more fun and exciting. This is one of the creative ways for the student council to raise money for their service projects. Funds from Accessory Day went towards repairing an inner city ministry bus.

Other goals include the Jackets for Jesus program that they do every year and raising money for the junior high mission trips.

“I love having the ability to represent my peers, make decisions, and just have fun,” said Robert Dicks, an eighth grade student council member. According to Mrs. McLean, the student council is, “The face of the junior high. The other students are encouraged to come to them with questions or comments.”

“If you like to be in leadership, come up with ideas, and interact with the faculty, you might be a likely candidate for student council.” Mrs. McLean is available if anyone has questions and ideas concerning the junior high student council.

Back to My Beginnings

September 8, 2009

2010. Wearing a white cap and gown, graduating with all of my life-long friends in the quad. That was how I always imagined it –until 2002, when the bomb was dropped.

“You’re going to be home schooled, Chelsea,” my mom said, lovingly. Her intentions were well-founded, and I acquiesced without too much trouble. Leaving my fourth grade friends would be difficult, but I knew it was the right thing just as well as mom did. The next seven years of my life would be an adventure, filled with plenty of learning and friend-making. Being at home isn’t all bad. After several months of being “bored” in my basement, I started realizing the freedom that I had in my learning. I could use my creativity to broaden my own academic horizons. It worked well.

Now it’s 2009, just under three hundred days away from my graduation date, and the finish line hasn’t moved. (The course just changed around a bit.) I’m back at GACS!  Why submit myself to the horrific torture that is American high school?  My answer is AP classes, college counselors, and the glory of being a SENIOR, my friend!

So here I am. Back at school. I’m not sure exactly what to expect, and I’m trying to keep an open mind.

Wish me luck!
