Some believe that how you spend your free time determines your future for life. If you spend your free time exercising, of course, you will be seen by others as physically fit. This is a product of how you spent your time.

Or let’s say you spend free time practicing whatever sport you play. As a result, you should have more success in your sport. However, let’s say you spend your free time playing video games. To some, this may seem a waste of time that you could be using productively; however, in the end, you decide how you want to spend your time. Therefore, if you spend your free time playing games; eventually you will be better than most of your competition. In the esports industry, being better than your competition can lead to a luxurious life.

To put into perspective how big some esports games are becoming, if you were to type in ‘lol’ on Google, most would assume it would bring up search results saying ‘laugh out loud’. However, now it brings up League of Legends; one of the most popular games ever. In 2017 the esports industry is predicted to reach $700 Million in revenue and grow to $1.5 billion by 2020. This is a yearly growth of 41.3 percent. In 2016, esports industry easily sold out the Staples Center in Los Angles and Madison Square Garden in New York for events. Even teams such as the Cleveland Cavilers and New York Yankees are buying in to secure their spot for a franchise.

Recently at GAC there has been a esports team started for games such as League of Legends and Super Smash Bros. The club spends time on the weekends “scrimmaging” 5-on-5 for fun and holds meetings on Wednesdays in Mr. Yancey’s room to meet and look at plays. Some may say that the time spent playing could be used toward studying for tests or preparing for colleges. However, it is time well spent playing a game with friends and growing a deeper bond. Although many still do not see it as such, esports is quickly becoming an important even in sports entertainment.
