Guardians of the Galaxy is a 2014 superhero epic serving as the 10th entry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Batista, Vin Diesel, & Bradley Cooper. Guardian’s follows the story of galactic misfit Peter Quill who forms an uneasy alliance with a group of extraterrestrials in pursuit of a much coveted stone. The cinematic epic is helmed by none other than director James Gunn with Kevin Feige serving as producer, and the film was distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on August 1st, 2014 to North American audiences. Upon release, Guardians garnered both critical and commercial box office success smashing previous box office records, and cementing its status as one of the best films of the MCU to date.

Production for the space epic first began way back in 2010 with Kevin Feige stating, “There are some obscure titles, too, like Guardians of the Galaxy.” The film was then announced to be in active development at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con with Marvel releasing two pieces of concept art to help entice the public. By August 2012, Gunn was in talks to direct the film, and Nicole Perlman was confirmed to be teaming up with James Gunn to help write a scrip. The duo spent two years writing a preliminary draft, and by January 2013, filming was scheduled to take place in London, England. Filming late began around July 6, 2013 in under the working title of “Full Tilt”, and by August 11, 2013, filming had began at London’s Millennium Bridge. By

October 12, 2013, filming had finished and post-production began to go well underway for the sci-fi epic.

The film’s visual effects were created by various studios such Moving Picture Company, Framestore, Luma Pictures, and more who worked on creating various characters and environments in the film such as Groot, Xandar, Thanos, and more. Marketing for the sci-fi epic began well back in June 2012, when Marvel filed eleven trademark applications for Guardians of the Galaxy, covering a variety of products ranging from toys to games to cosmetics.  On August 2013, Kevin Feige presented footage first revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con, at a Disney Expo, and the first trailer for the film debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on February 18, 2014. Social media response to the trailer was massive, with 88,000 mentions across various forms of social media in half a day. On March 2014, a television special called Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe, included a sneak peek of Guardians of the Galaxy, and on July 2014, Marvel launched a viral marketing campaign that allowed users to visit some of the planets depicted in the film.

Commercial and critical response to the film has been overwhelmingly positive with a current box office gross of $489.5 million and a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of a resounding 92%. Scott Foundas of Variety said “James Gunn’s presumptive franchise-starter is overlong, overstuffed and sometimes too eager to please, but the cheeky comic tone keeps things buoyant.”  Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph said, “A brand new summer family blockbuster this may be, but it plays by old, half-forgotten rules; trimming out the clutter and cross-referencing for snappy, streamlined, Saturday-cartoon fun”. In the end, Guardians of the Galaxy is a resounding testament to the fun and warmth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and goes to show that even a talking raccoon or sentient tree can get movie goers giddied up and excited.
